Emotional relief

An important part of our lives that has more influence on our decisions than we think – emotions. Especially when things get too much: work becomes more stressful, unforeseen costs, unfortunate coincidences and our emotions start to overwhelm us. We feel lost, negative feelings take over and the wrong decisions are quickly made. This is completely normal and dealing with such situations is the key to success. This article is about effective tips and techniques for emotional relief and how we can quickly regain inner peace in such situations using simple means.

Reflecting, organizing and recognizing

Relief through journaling

Writing in a diary is the perfect way to capture your thoughts and record them on paper. Actively taking time to organize and express emotions, experiences and thoughts can help us to recognize thought patterns. This allows us to see connections that are often not visible in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With new insights, not only can problems be solved, but negative emotions can also be reduced.

How does journaling work? Simply take a sheet of paper, a pen and a few minutes. This short task requires your full attention. Go through it in your head: What thoughts come to mind? Write down what you are thinking about and what you are feeling. Just writing down all these points will relieve you. Just as a calendar entry relieves our mind of the burden of not forgetting a certain thing, journaling helps us to externalize our inner thoughts in an orderly manner and forces us to sort our thoughts. One advantage of this method is that it is “private” and although your own thoughts are processed and externalized, they can still remain a secret.

Social exchange

Sharing with friends and family can, like journaling, help to provide emotional relief. Relationships in general have a strong influence on mental health and should not be neglected even in stressful phases of life.

Make a date with the people you trust, even if it’s just for a coffee. Talk about your thoughts and feelings and share what’s on your mind with people you love. As you talk, your thoughts will be sorted and this component alone will help you get one step closer to inner peace. Sharing and listening attentively in conversations helps immensely to build and maintain a deep connection. The mutual feeling of support acts as a pillar in difficult times, helps to reduce stress and promotes a positive attitude.

Exercises and activities – emotional relaxation

Breathing exercises:

It may sound crazy, but when we are stressed, we tend to breathe shallowly and quickly. However, this intuitive change can lead to more tension, even without us realizing it. Incorporating breathing exercises into everyday life not only helps to calm our bodies through long, deep breaths, but also dispels negative thoughts by focusing on the moment.

This exercise is a short meditation that influences your well-being and also increases your concentration. You only need a few minutes of your attention: take a deep breath and actively pay attention to what you are feeling: Can you feel your lungs filling with air? Is the air warm or cold? Does it tickle your nose or can you perhaps feel your abdominal wall moving? It will help you to close your eyes for this exercise and not to judge the thoughts that arise, but simply let them happen. Focus on your breathing and observe how your mind begins to calm down. Regular meditation will help you to improve your understanding of yourself and the world around you and to better withstand high levels of stress.

Activities that distract you from stressful thoughts:

Similar to breathing exercises, simple activities are a way to create a distraction from stressful thoughts. Such activities should require your attention and ideally also be fun. We recommend activities such as cooking, dancing or reading an exciting book. The activity should be a change from stressful everyday life and serve as an emotional relief.

Coloring is a beautiful and inexpensive option. Coloring pages are also a meaningful activity for adults that promotes creativity and calms the mind. Sport & exercise:

Like the activities already mentioned, sport also helps to relieve stress and tension. Sport has been proven to have a positive effect on physical and mental health. Not only can we reduce stress through exercise, it also helps to relieve anxiety and make us feel better through the production of happiness hormones such as endorphins. For emotional relief, active sport helps us to interrupt negative thought patterns by focusing completely on the sport and our body. In warmer months, we recommend table tennis, which is also great for improving reaction times. For the colder months, the indoor pool is a suitable alternative – swimming is also a great alternative that is particularly easy on our joints.

Mindset and mindfulness for emotional relief

Recognize negative spirals to:

One negative thought quickly leads to another, or even to an action that we regret, which in turn leads to the next unpleasant thought. It is important that such spirals can be recognized and interrupted at an early stage. The first points in this article will help you to do this by reflecting on your own thoughts and recognizing patterns. Awareness, mindfulness and self-reflection are skills that are particularly valuable in today’s fast-paced and confusing world.

Change your perspective. See things from a different angle. Focus on the positive aspects: what positive things happened today and what brings me joy? What can I look forward to in the future?

Gratitude – promoting positive emotions

Emotional relief can be achieved through a positive mindset. We too often get lost in fear, worry and sorrow. This is our natural protective mechanism, designed to protect us from danger. But we must not forget to devote ourselves to the beautiful things in life and appreciate them. Have you actively thought about what you are grateful for in life today? As a simple addition to journaling, you can quickly introduce a ritual with a gratitude journal. Take a few minutes every day to think about what you are grateful for today. Even if it’s just things that are small or seem obvious – they are worth appreciating. A sunny day, the roof over your head, a comfortable bed or a warm meal – we should not forget to be grateful for the here and now.
