Hand eye coordination

What is hand-eye coordination?

Hand-eye coordination is a skill that helps us to perform tasks that require the interaction of the sense of sight and the movement of the hands. This enables us to carry out precise, targeted movements. Even if we take some activities for granted, such as writing and driving a car. Without hand-eye coordination, these would not be possible. The same goes for sports such as tennis, basketball or hobbies such as sewing and drawing. But we can also perform small tasks, such as tying shoelaces, because our body feels like it takes over the coordination “automatically”. For children in particular, it is important to promote eye-hand coordination and thus help their development.

If it happens almost “automatically” – why should we concern ourselves with the issue?

Of course, it’s all well and good that we can do so many things, but the better our coordination is, the more efficiently we can do things. For example, we can perform tasks faster or with greater precision.   This topic is particularly important for children at a young age. They need to be supported in developing this skill. The great thing is – we can improve the coordination between hands and eyes with simple means.

How can we improve hand-eye coordination?

Fortunately, there are many simple options that can even be fun. With regular practice, we can see steady improvements. Simply take a few minutes a day for yourself and your children and you will not only have more fun with the tasks, but also see great progress.

For children

The simplest and most popular options include simple games of skill. These are available to buy for different age recommendations – whether blocks, keys to a lock or a simple puzzle. Once shown, the little ones are already curious to repeat the whole thing. There is a large selection for very young children, but for older children it is important to find an activity that is also fun so that it is not perceived as work.

Craft work: Cutting, coloring, gluing – are not only fun for children, but also require a high level of concentration and coordination. Just like the puzzles, but with a little more scope for creative development, handicrafts offer the little ones a great opportunity to develop both fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Offer your children an opportunity to try something new and get them excited about an exciting craft task. Perhaps recreate something from the local area or someone from the family out of modeling clay? Look forward to fun and inspiring creations!

Coloring in coloring pages

Coloring pictures: When coloring in coloring pages, lines must be adhered to and, in addition to concentration, fine motor skills and color perception, also promote children’s hand-eye coordination. Similar to drawing, the paper is focused on and the hand movement is adapted when coloring. A relaxing and creative activity that children love. However, it is particularly exciting when you can choose your own favorite motif. Mal-O-Mat.de offers you a huge collection of free coloring pictures in a wide variety of categories. How about unicorns, knights or some cute little animals?

For children and adults

Sports: Tennis and table tennis are perfect opportunities to train hand-eye coordination and improve reaction time. The focus is on the ball – we have to focus on the ball in space, assess where it will be in the next moment and bring the racket into the right position in time.

Drawing or sewing (for adults): As drawing requires precise movement of the hands, we are usually very focused with our eyes on the page. And not without reason: drawing and painting require strong hand-eye coordination in order to draw lines as intended. Have you ever tried to draw a perfectly straight line or a circular ball? The great thing about drawing is that it also encourages creativity and is fun when the results are visible and you can see a positive development in your skills. It’s similar with sewing with your hands – stitches have to be made precisely in order to achieve a clean result. Concentration, eye focus and the correct movement of the hands lead to the desired result.

Hand-eye coordination can be of great importance for physical and mental development. In addition to the activities mentioned here, there are of course many other great toys that have been designed precisely for this purpose.
